The End of Telephone Betting

It's the end of an era as UK-based Bet365 has finally put an end to its telebetting service.  The company cited a lack of interest in placing wagers over one's phone via voice communication.

Spokesperson Pat Cooney said tele-betting “had become such a minimal part of our business that it didn’t justify the staffing levels.”

Bet365 this week was making waves across the pond in the US.

Online casino software provider will soon be launching its games in the state of New Jersey through a partnership with Bet365 and the Hard Rock Atlantic City Casino.

The Financial times reports that Playtech’s chief executive Mor Weizer, along with Fabio Schiavolin, chief executive of subsidiary Snaitech, added to their personal stakes in the gambling technology company the same day they received approval to enter the New Jersey market.

“The US is a highly strategic market for Playtech and we see significant demand for the full breadth of our product offering,” said Mr Weizer. “This is the first step for Playtech in the US and we are very excited about the long-term opportunity.” Playtech’s shares closed over 5 per cent up after the announcement.

A bill to legalize sports betting in the state of California has passed the Senate Committee but faces stiff opposition from the powerful tribes.  Without their support, the measure is essentially dead on arrival.

LegalSportsReport reports:

The letter addressed to the two committee chairmen comes from 15 individual tribes and two tribal associations. One of those organizations, the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, represents 34 tribes across the state.

The letter gives a preview of the kind of response the amendment will get from tribal representatives at the hearing.

“We cannot view your SCA 6 any other way than yet another betrayal of an agreement between the State of California and Indian tribes.”

The tribes oppose language in the bill that permits non-tribal casinos from offering card games such as Vegas-style blackjack.  Non-tribal casinos would not be allowed to offer sports betting.

The tribes also reject mobile wagering with the exception of on-premise.

LegalSportsReport also notes that the tribes opted to push for their own sports betting initiative rather than work with the legislature on a referendum. Tribes still didn’t appreciate being shut out on the legislative amendment before its release.
