PGA Tour Picks – BMW Championship Odds
The playoff field has been slashed to the top-70 in the FedExCup standings and those remaining gather for the middle tournament of the playoff format this week at the BMW Championship, taking place at the Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago. The lineup is down to 69 after Webb Simpson withdrew earlier in the week, taking one of the opening favorites off the board. This is the last chance for those on the fringe of the top-30 to make a move to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship and all the money that comes with it. There is no cut line this week making things a little more interesting. And I doubt we’re going to see a runaway like we did last week when Dustin Johnson lapped the field to win The Northern Trust by 11-swings. DJ opened as the favorite but was overtaken at the top of the odds board by Jon Rahm, who’s getting plenty of support from the betting public. There are several players on the bubble of the top-30, which gets you to the season-ending Tour Championship and a shot at the pot of gold. Those guys need to step up this week. Odds Analysis
It’s odd to have a PGA tournament and not mention Tiger Woods. So, let’s talk about the Big Cat. He’s positioned well down the odds board – at least by his standards – and there hasn’t been much talk about him leading into this week. Is that just what Woods needs to show everyone he still has it? There is a reason why Tigermania has subsided. He’s playing back-to-back tournaments for the first time since last year’s playoffs and when he did play he was less than stellar finishing outside the top-35 in three events since the restart. Buyer beware when backing Woods this week.
After his dominant performance last week Johnson is getting plenty of attention, and deservedly so. He reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the OWGR and if you could get any higher DJ would be there. He was a ridiculous 30-under winning The Northern Trust by 11-shots. It was his second win in his last six starts and followed a T2 at the PGA Championship. There’s no one hotter coming in.
Despite shooting 16-under and grabbing a share of sixth last week, Rahm slipped from the world No. 1 ranking. The Spaniard has sharpened his game after a shaky restart winning the Memorial last month along with a T13 at Harding Park. He’s one of the few in the field with experience on the Olympia Fields layout reaching the quarterfinals of the 2015 U.S. Amateur.
And speaking of Olympia Fields, the North Course hasn’t been used on Tour since the 2003 U.S. Open. Few in the field will have experience on the lot, but that’s probably not a big deal since it has undergone several face lifts over the years. Bryson DeChambeau won the 2015 Amateur at this spot and he’s looking to make up for a MC last week, his second in four starts.

You could pick a name out of a hat and have a decent chance of winning an outright bet. That’s how good the field is. You have to be good and consistent to get to this point in the season. Looking at the odds list Jim Herman is down near the bottom yet it was just a few weeks ago he prevailed at the Wyndham Championship. That’s one more victory than Rory McIlroy has since the restart and McIlroy is one of six players with shorter than 15/1 odds.
What I’m getting at is that the field is wide open. Johnson stands out after last week’s performance, Rahm has been at the top of his game recently and DeChambeau, despite his recent struggles, has been one of the best all season.
Sitting just behind that top group are some talented and equally hot golfers. Collin Morikawa missed the second cut of his brief pro career last week when the putter took a vacation. But you have to admire the youngster after his scintillating performance at the PGA Championship. Daniel Berger has been smokin hot since before the lockdown posting a trio of top-10s. He exited the break with a win at the Schwab and hasn’t let up. He was solo third at The Northern Trust.
Harris English has often been overlooked which is why he might be worth a risk. He has six top-10s in 18 starts this season placing among the top-23 in each of his last six. He got greased up for this production by finishing second at TPC Boston. He also has history at Olympia Fields while playing collegiately.
However you look at this event it’s going to be a doozy. No cut means a lot of maneuvering down the stretch so hold on.
