Horse racing lovers couldn’t ask for a better weekend with a total of 14 races over two days with all but one being a Grade 1. And the best of the best go at it making for some tense moments for handlers and bettors. Each race is limited to a maximum of 14 horses and all competitors earned their chance to become a Breeders’ Cup champion. Some horses qualified automatically by winning a designated Breeders’ Cup Challenge race while others were ranked on a points system.

The Breeders’ Cup lineup leads us to the main event with the Classic being the ultimate and defining race of the international season. Open to thoroughbreds three and older, the Classic annually attracts top worldwide talent. The field is limited to 14 horses that run 1 1/4 miles for part of the $6 million prize purse. This year’s Classic is loaded with winners and is one of the deepest races in recent years despite only having 10 entrants. Improbable is the betting favorite, though he may have some detractors since he was the beaten favorite in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He rose to the top of the odds list on the strength of three straight Grade 1 wins knocking off four horses in Saturday’s field to get there.

While Improbable is the current favorite, there are others close behind with shorter than 10/1 odds. Tiz the Law had a streak of three straight G1 wins and a shot at the Triple Crown halted by Authentic in the Kentucky Derby when he was a big favorite. Keep in mind that Tiz the Law’s only two losses came at Churchill Downs so he probably doesn’t care for the track. That has to mean something this time around.

By My Standards is worth a look at favorable odds. He’s been nearly unbeatable for over a year with four wins and two seconds. However, he hasn’t won a G1 race coming up short against tougher competition. And there’s that 11th-place finish at last year’s Kentucky Derby that sticks out like a sore thumb. Coming off a near 2-length victory at the G2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs in September, By My Standards will definitely have to turn it up a notch.

The elite play of older athletes in other sports hasn’t gone unnoticed at the track. If Tom Brady was a horse he’d probably be Tom’s d’Etat, so I guess the name fits. The 7-year old finished last year on a roll with three wins in four races and the heater has continued. He did finish third behind Improbable and By My Standards last time out, but an early stumble threw him off his game.

Bob Baffert is well represented in this race with one of Improbable, Maximum Security and Authentic looking to bring the legendary trainer his record fourth win. That trio and Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law are likely to attract most of the handle. Tom’s d’Etat is a sleeper looking to become the first winner of the Classic older than age 5.
