NJ Considers Allowing Bets on Rutgers, Seton Hall

New Jersey's explosive online sports betting market lacks one important component: The inability to place bets on popular in-school teams.  Sportsbooks licensed offshore are looking to take advantage, though most of the big name sites have opted not to accept customers from the Garden State.

Wagering on the Rutgers Scarlett Knights is forbidden by state law.  So too is betting on the Seton Hall Pirates college basketball team.  Rutgers basketball team was quite good last season and its football program is starting to show some glimmers of improvement.

Now New Jersey lawmakers are looking to amend the state constitution to remove a big restriction in a wagering market that is smashing national sports betting records, the Associated Press reports.

Several steps must be taken first before a public referendum can be placed on the 2021 general election ballot.

The bill intitially sought to allow wagering only on college championship games.  The new measure looks to extend betting to regular season games.

“We got the blessing of the NCAA and the Attorney General’s Office and a lot of the teams so we figured why not just go for the whole thing?” Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Democrat from North Jersey, said.

New Jersey’s sports betting industry shattered its own national record in September, with more than $748 million in bets placed.
