About the Louisiana Derby

This grade II race is run annually at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana on 1+3⁄16 miles of dirt with a $1 million purse.

Two Kentucky Derby winners were winners of the Louisiana Derby: Black Gold in 1924, and Grindstone in 1996. The 1988 winner, Risen Star, went on to become a "Dual Classic Winner" by winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
