The event will take place Wednedsay May 5 at 8 pm ET on the subscription video service PokerGO.
What is This All About?
The all-time 15 World Series of Poker bracelet leader Phil Hellmuth has tried to defend his place in the poker hierarchy, with the "High Stakes Duel" meant to ask the question, Do WSOP bracelets really tell you who’s a great poker player?
On Wednesday (March 30, 2021) that question was partially answered with Hellmuth winning the first round on May 30, a $50,000 buy-in heads-up No-limit Hold’em showdown. He rallied from a huge deficit to claim the victory.
Hellmuth “needed a miracle, followed by a second miracle, parlayed with a third, fourth and fifth miracle” to win the match, Negreanu said.
Hellmuth is the all-time leader with 15 World Series of Poker bracelets. Negreanu has won over $42,000,000 in live prize money during his poker career.
Starting a Trend
Negreanu has more to lose if he fails to beat Hellmuth Wednesday night. Prior to taking on Hellmuth, Negreanu had lost a similar challenge in February to Doug Polk.
Negreanu’s coach and founder of Hybrid Poker, MJ Gonzales has just entered into a high-stakes match against Dan Smith. Smith, who is currently fifth on poker’s all-time money list with $37.06 million in career tournament earnings.
