Costa Rica Covid-19 Numbers Surge

The world's second largest online gambling hub after Malta, Costa Rica, is dealing with their worst case load of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.  2236 new cases were reported on Tuesday with hospitals throughout the San Jose area said to be at capacity.

The country is home to just over 5 million people. In the United States, this would be akin to South Carolina seeing just over 2000 cases of Covid.  The Palmeto State did see similar numbers between the months of December and February.

Costa Rica is limited with vaccine availabity.  There are reports of residents flying into the US to get their Covid vaccine shots.

Across Costa Rica’s public and private hospital system, 1,312 people are hospitalized. Of those, 459 are in intensive care with an age range of 17 to 86 years.

On Wednesday Costa Rica added 17 deaths related to Covid-19; on Thursday there were 14; on Friday there were 24; on Saturday there were 21; on Sunday there were 23; on Monday there were 21; and Tuesday there were 26 deaths.

Costa Rica has reached a total of 3,456 deaths related to Covid-19.

Hospitals in the Central American nation of Costa Rica are running out of space for COVID-19 patients amid a new wave of infections, the president of the national doctors' union said on Tuesday.

The sharp rise in coronavirus infections has led to calls for a fresh lockdown by doctors, potentially dealing another blow to businesses in the Central American tourist destination.

The government has been reluctant to impose more restrictions.

Edwin Solano, president of the national doctors' union, insists these measures may be necessary as hospitals run out of space in intensive care units.

"The pandemic has surpassed the capacity of our health system," he said. "There are no beds for COVID patients, there are no ICU beds for COVID. (The situation) is delicate and serious."

DR Congo has 1 point and likely needs a win to have a realistic shot at advancing as a third-place team. Uzbekistan has 0 points and must win to stay alive. A draw probably eliminates Uzbekistan and likely does very little for DR Congo.
