How can a team located in a town with few fans and less revenue consistently outperform the most historic brand in professional sports and a team with the largest payroll in its league?  That’s the never-ending question of the Tampa Bay Rays and their superiority over the New York Yankees.  Tampa Bay plays in a dump of a dome that was outdated before they moved into it over two decades ago.  There is zero fan interest and support of the Rays, and they make no money.  But what they do have are stock market wizards that use the same Wall Street metrics that made them rich for utilizing baseball talent.  Meanwhile, the lumbering Yankees just try and buy themselves pennants.  Problematic is that Tampa Bay is getting better results.

This American League East matchup takes place on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at 7:10 p.m. ET from Tropicana Field.  This game will air live on MLB Network.  Betting options for every game on the 2021 MLB schedule are available at BookMaker.eu.

Odds Analysis

To the masses, this matchup is a no-brainer. New York is their choice based on power branding and even more payroll.  New York’s fan base goes back to family grandfathers.  And their payroll advantages go back to the mid-1970s when free agency blew baseball wide open.  But a deeper handicap reveals frustration with the Yankees and how they consistently underperform their reputation.

This year New York is one of the biggest money losers on the board.  The problem with betting on the Yankees is a flood of square money. Oddsmakers jack up the prices to try and even action out.  Casual gamblers are more than willing to pay.  Sharps look elsewhere.

Of great concern to all gamblers is the status of the Yankees lineup.  Several players, most prominently slugger Aaron Judge, tested positive for COVID-19 a couple of weeks ago.  Judge and the rest of those players are now listed as day-to-day status.

Tampa Bay is a favorite of the Wise Guys.  No team could be more opposite of the Yankees.  Most fans can’t name a single player on the Rays roster.  But that is how the sharps like it.  Tampa Bay continues to deliver optimum betting value as a team that the public ignores and can never understand.

New York has dropped three of their last four games, with all four of those matchups going under the total.  The Yankees are 51-47 straight up, 42-56 vs. the run line, and 42-53-3 under the total.  New York is 9.5-games out of first place in the American League East.

Tampa Bay is in good form with four wins in their last five games.  Three of their most recent four games went under the total.  The Rays now stand at 60-40 straight up, 55-44 vs. the run line, and 53-43-3 over the total.  Tampa Bay is 1.5-games behind the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

Probable Pitchers

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is the probable starter for the Yankees.  Montgomery is 3-5 with a 3.96 earned run average and 1.175 WHIP.  New York has lost Montgomery’s last five consecutive starts.

Left-hander Shane McClanahan is the probable starter for the Rays. McClanahan is 4-3 with a 3.88 earned run average and 1.246 WHIP.  The Rays have won three of his last four starts.

Bet Yankees at Rays at Bookmaker.eu

The Rays have won 11 of their last 17 games with the Yankees.  Five of the previous eight in this matchup have gone under the total. At Tropicana Field, the Rays are 5-3 in their most recent eight home games with the Yankees.  Five of the last nine between these teams at Tampa Bay went over the total.

New York’s lineup instability is a problem for this matchup.  Tampa Bay has proven to be the better value on the board all season and will get a reasonable price despite being a quality home team.

MLB Score Prediction:  Rays 5, Yankees 2
