Twitch Bans Gambling Related Links, Affiliate Codes

One of the most popular video live streaming services used by poker players and eGamers will no longer allow gambling-related links or referral codes, it was revealed late Wednesday.

The new regulations will begin their enforcement Tuesday, August 17th.

Twitch claims this is a means of protecting users from scams.

“To prevent harm and scams created by questionable gambling services that sponsor content on Twitch, we will prohibit sharing links and/or referral codes to sites that offer slots, roulette, or dice games,” the announcement reads. “We will continue to monitor gambling-related content and update our approach as needed.”

Needless-to-say, the reaction from users was mostly negative.

Popular World of Warcraft streamer Zach (AKA Asmongold) offered the following via his Twitter account Wednesday evening:

"Twitch's new rules for gambling don't do anything other than pay lip service to concern while still profiting -No age gate -Can link to Twitter/Link tree just like Onlyfans girls do for affiliate codes -Can still do sponsored streams and stream gambling content."

But some expressed concerns over minors having the ability to gamble using the streaming service.

@ANewDrug tweeted:

"Yes, children are gambling directly through services offered by twitch. and again it’s really weird that you would defend that in any capacity. There is no age limit on gambling through twitch streams if you have a social media account, that is not OK, and is clearly wrong."

And Gregory Steam, Gergő tweeted this irony:

"You can still promote the shit out of @skinbetgg while showing your bulge half-naked in a hot tub while licking a dirty microphone!"
