California's embattled Governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, received some encouraging news this week ahead of the September 14 recall election.  Two polls found Newsom enjoying significant support in his bid to remain in office.  BetOnline has Newsom still California Governor on December 31 of this year at -1000.  Think he'll be out?  Bet $100 to win $550 at BetOnline.

How We Got Here

Since assuming office, a total of seven recall efforts have been launched against Newsom.

On February 20, 2020, a petition was introduced with the following message:  "People in this state suffer the highest taxes in the nation, the highest homelessness rates, and the lowest quality of life as a result."

On June 10, 2020, then-Secretary of State Alex Padilla approved petitioners' petitions for circulation. It focused on a variety of grievances, such as illegal immigrants, homelessness, taxes, and water rationing.

The recall effort sought 2 million signatures.

442,000 signatures were obtained and verified after Newsom was photographed attending an indoor birthday party gathering despite guidelines issued by his own administration limiting private gatherings to no more than three households.  The birthday party was attended by more than this number and it was later revealed that lobbyists were present.

Ultimately enough signatures were obtained for the recall election to take place.

Recent Polling

A SurveyUSA/San Diego Union-Tribune poll found Newsom beating back the recall by eight percentage points while a more recent Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) poll released Wednesday night shows the governor leading by double digits.

That poll, conducted among 1,706 Californians between Aug. 20 to Aug. 29, shows 58% of likely voters plan to vote "no" on the first question (Shall Gavin Newsom be recalled?) while just 39% plan to vote "yes."
