The Orange Bowl is among the most prestigious of college bowl games.  It began in 1935 and has tie-ins with the ACC (1999–present)
and SEC/Big Ten/Notre Dame (December 2014–present).

Tennessee at one time was ranked number one in the nation. They would close the regular season with an impressive enough record of 10-2 Straight Up (9-3 Against The Spread).

Clemson was back to being Clemson this season, losing only two games and going 7-6 Against The Spread.

Who Do the Line Trends Favor?

Clemson was coming in at +6.5 with the line dipping to +5.5.

We observed a total of four comparables in terms of the line range this season, most either alternating or moving up instead of the current downward trend.

Arizona  +5 +6 +6.5 (Sat AM Only) SDSU  (dog wins and covers by double digits).

UAB -5.5 / -6 / -6.5 Liberty (Dog Liberty covers and wins outright) Liberty 0.66 Wrong Team Favored and Overlay of 6 to 7.

Northern Illinois +5.5 - +6.5 Tulsa (Dog Northern Illinois covers in a 3-point loss) 8.42 Underlay of 2 to 3.

Miami +5.5 to +6.5 Texas A&M (Favorite covers with 8 point win) Texas A&M 6.03 On the Money.

We get a number of Vols 5.3.  Not only is the wrong team favored but there is a massive 11 or greater overlay.  All the departures in the world will have a tough time accounting for this gigantic discrepancy.

The overlay of this magnitude will go in favor of the dog, Tennessee.

Orange Bowl Betting Trends

Tennessee holds a 11-6-2 series lead against the Tigers, but Clemson won the most recent meeting, 27-14 in the 2003 Peach Bowl.

Volunteers are 9-3 Against The Spread in their last 12 games overall.

Volunteers are 8-24 ATS in their last 32 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points.

Tennessee is 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games after accumulating less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.

Volunteers are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.

Volunteers are 2-8 Against The Spread in their last 10 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.

Tennessee is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games.

Tigers are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 bowl games.

Tigers are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games in December.

Clemson is 18-8 ATS in their last 26 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.

Tigers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games.

Important to Know Before Placing a Bet

Neither of these teams star quarterbacks will take to the field here.

Joe Milton III makes his second start of this season and fourth of his Tennessee, a reult of Hendon Hooker's season ending ACL tear.

A win in this bowl game will be the first 11-win season for Tennessee since 2001.

Milton will be missing Biletnikoff Award winner Jalin Hyatt and fellow receiver Cedric Tillman after both opted out of the Orange Bowl and declared for the NFL Draft.

Two other Volunteers -- defensive end Byron Young and right tackle Darnell Wright -- will play in the contest and then declare for the draft.

None of this is enough to account for the huge 11-point overlay favoring Clemson.
