More on This Year's Louisiana Derby

This year's Louisiana Derby will be run on 1+3⁄16 miles of dirt and is open to all 3-year-olds.  It features a $1 million purse.

The son of Not This Time, Epicenter, appears ready for this all important Kentucky Derby prep race.  He is the winner of the Risen Star Stakes and he did so in a dominating fashion.

“First, I want to say how pleased I am with the distance of the series (Lecomte, Risen Star, Louisiana Derby) for the 3-year-olds here,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “It was important for him (Epicenter) to start at the mile then progress like he has through the longer distances and now we get to this race and the mile and three-sixteenths could be a separator. He has progressed well through each of these steps and his progress has been very encouraging up to this point and he will just have to prove it again on Saturday.”

The Louisiana Derby will offer top-tier qualifying points to the Kentucky Derby, distributing them on a 100-40-20-10 basis to the first four finishers.  This race will result in an automatic Kentucky Derby qualifier for the winner and runner-up.
