Next year maybe - that's when online poker could become legal in the state of California.

The bill was put on the shelf for the remainder of the year and should be scheduled for reintroduction to the Senate Appropriations Committee in January of 2009.

Assemblyman Lloyd Levine's bill AB 2026 started out in February this year as a bid for a full enquiry into the potential for regulated and taxed online poker in the state. However, it was then amended to actually legalise online poker in California, only to be further amended to take it back to an independent investigation or survey.

The state of California is home to an estimated two million plus poker players.
