Mehmet Oz is making another move in the Pennsylvania Republican primary race, and political bettors have taken notice. While Democrat John Fetterman, the state's current lieutenant governor, is still a -200 favorite to win this November, Oz has cut into that lead.
Online bookmaker, BetOnline, initially opened Oz as a +1000 underdog to win this past summer's primary, he became the -135 odds favorite.
Oz would go on to win that primary but his implied probability of defeating the Democratic incumbent was just 35.1%. At the time, Fetterman was widely expected to win.
Now the GOP candidate has gotten within the margin of error after Fetterman's extended period of holding a double digit lead.
Recent polls include Emerson College (Fetterman +2), Fox News (Fetterman +4) and Franklin & Marshall College (Fetterman +3).
The Emerson poll indicates 8% of voters are still on the fence while 2% plan to vote for someone else.
Ticket splitters might have an impact on this race. This is where voters look to support a Democrat for one high-profile office and a Republican for another.
“What you’re seeing is a repudiation of extremism,” Morgan Boyd, a Republican and a Lawrence County commissioner who endorsed the Democratic nominee for governor, Josh Shapiro, but is backing GOP Senate nominee Mehmet Oz, said in an interview with NBC News. “Across the board, moderates are rising up and saying, 'Enough is enough.'”
