The Daily Mail on Monday featured the headline "Pope Francis fuels rumours he may quit in sermon reflecting on ‘the virtue of stepping aside at the right time’ and ‘learning to take our leave’".

Along with that headline came news of internal pressures that might result in an abrupt departure.

Pressure has been mounting against the current Pope from conservative factions of the church, who see Pope Francis as more liberal than his predecessor.

The former Pope died on New Year's Eve, 2022.

Pope Francis started making headlines to start the new year after announcing he would be visiting the central Italian city of L’Aquila in August for a feast initiated by Pope Celestine V, one of the few pontiffs who resigned before Pope Benedict XVI stepped down in 2013.

Last month, it was revealed that Pope Francis had already signed his resignation letter, but only as a precaution.

"I signed it and said: 'If I should become impaired for medical reasons or whatever, here is my resignation'."

BetOnline Has Updated Its Odds Here.

As for replacements, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Cardinal Peter Turkson, Cardinal Christoph Schonborn and Archbishop Angelo Scola all were coming in at between 3-1 and 6-1 early odds.
