The latest bill being offered up in the North Carolina legislature for mobile sports betting offers a date to launch no sooner than January 1 of next year.

The House Judiciary 1 Committee does have a scheduled hearing for both bills today (Tuesday June 21) at 4 pm.  While there is still some opposition in both party caucuses, a key provision to raise the collected taxes from 8% to 14% is likely to appease some who were on the fence.

The Senate would also have to agree with any changes, but that bill would not be required to go through Senate committees.

“As of right now, I’m optimistic that we have the votes to pass it,” House Majority Whip Rep. Jon Hardister told Axios. “Most of the feedback I’ve gotten from my caucus has been positive.”

Should the House Judiciary Committee approve the bills, they will go to the House Finance Committee and then the House Rules Committee for a floor vote as early as next week.

If passed, residents and visitors of the state would be able to place bets on professional, college, electronic and amateur sports, though not youth events such as the Little League Championship.

Sports betting is currently only allowed in two North Carolina tribal casinos.

The NC legislative period ends June 30.

Governor Roy Cooper was widely expected to sign any measure that lands on his desk.
