It's hard to remember any time that the College Basketball season has been as volatile as it's been this season. It seems like every week that a new number one is named it loses its next game.
The last No 1 to fall was Kentucky, which took the pipe at South Carolina on Tuesday night. Kentucky is back home in Rupp Arena this Saturday, when it entertains Vanderbilt. Kentucky will live up to their Wildcat reputation in that game - even though the Commodores will put it up to them it's very hard to see Kentucky not waking up after that defeat in South Carolina.
Kansas is the No 1 elect after Kentucky's defeat but the Jayhawks are playing a huge rivalry game on Saturday when they visit Kansas State. Kansas State is wildly unpredictable - it followed its nine point win over Texas with a meek defeat against Oklahoma State - but if Kansas State won't fight tooth and claw when the Jayhawks come to Manhattan then everything we know about college basketball is wrong. I kinda like the home town team here.
Duke has been struggling on the road this year and that problem is unlikely to be eased when the Blue Devils visit Georgetown on Saturday. The Hoyas lost badly at home to Syracuse, their great Big East rival, and they'll be looking for revenge against another Duke team that looks almost, but not quite.
Finally, Baylor's visit to Texas will tell us a lot about either school's prospects at the Tournament. Baylor was one of the hottest teams in the nation until Conference play began, when defeats against Kansas and Kansas State took the sheen off them. But Texas reacted to its No 1 status by dropping two straight games, at Kansas State and Connecticut, and that's not really cutting-down-the-nets form. On Saturday in Austin, one team is getting back on track and one team is looking at a bad situation getting worse. My money is on the Bears to cover.
