Macau will suspend almost all business activities for a week from Monday in a bid to control a rising number of new Covid-19 infections.

Like many places throughout the world, Macau shut its casinos back in February 2000 at the start of the global pandemic.

Essential services such as water and gas utilities as well as businesses including supermarkets, pharmacies and hotels will remain open.

Service workers will be required to take PCR tests on a daily basis during the seven-day shutdown.

Macau said Sunday it was recording 93 new cases on average, bringing the total number of infections in the latest outbreak starting June 18 to 1,467.
