Parity Problem in the CFB, Say Oddsmakers: 4 Teams See 70% of Action
There will undoubtedly be upsets during the upcoming college football season, but the odds suggest the Big 4 will be among the final 4.
The BetOnline team released odds to reach the College Football Playoff tournament Tuesday. Alabama is an odds-on favorite (-150) to make the playoff while the other three expected contenders (Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson) all have better than 3-1 odds.
Then it goes down from there, way down.
USC comes in with 9-1 odds. And that is the last of the single-digit odds to win.
"I can't recall a season where there was so much separation between the top teams and the rest of the field," BetOnline.ag Brand Manager Dave Mason said. "The talent, the schedules, the conferences...it just kind of created a perfect storm of superiority in the college football ranks. Here's to hoping some team surprises us."
Mason said that nearly 70% of the book's total handle for this year championship is on those four teams. Alabama comprises of more than 30% of that total while Ohio State is second at 22%.
Texas A&M did have slightly shorter odds a few months back, but they've dropped to 11-1. Both Oklahoma teams have seen a real dropoff as well.
