2022 Heisman Trophy Odds Movements After Week 1
There have been some 2022 Heisman odds movements at BetOnline over the last 24 hours. Anthony Richardson moved from 33-1 to 14-1 and Stetson Bennett from 60-1 to 20-1.
Clearly CJ Stroud didn't look like the phenom he was painted out to be preseason. He still helped his team to a win against Notre Dame, but Ohio State did not cover the 17-point spread.
Stroud wasn't bad at all. He threw two touchdown passes. And, more importantly, he is still the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy after Week 1.
But Richardson was on fire for the Florida Gators. He completed 17-of-24 passes for 168 yards. Richardson also rushed 11 times for 104 yards and had three touchdowns, helping guide his team to a 29-26 win with the Utes favored at -2.5. The total rushing yards odds for Richardson were set at 40.5 ahead of this game. Yes, he overachieved.
"My wife could call plays with that guy at quarterback," new Gators head coach Billy Napier said of Richardson. "His legs, they're a difference maker. You saw it tonight. The fourth-down play, in the last drive. The 2-point conversion, I mean, come on. He did that exact same thing in practice one day. I'm talking about the exact scenario.
"I think we're figuring out here that this guy's a pretty special player."
Florida was down 26-22 with the clock winding down when Richardson took control after Napier told him to go score the game winner.
"My heart kind of froze," Richardson said. "I'd never really heard those words. Especially in a situation like that, with a crowd as big as that. Just having the ball in my hands, I feel like the team trusts me. The coaches trust me to make a play, make something happen. I'm glad they trust me for that."
And so much for Georgia losing all those players during the offseason.
No. 3 Georgia defeated No. 11 Oregon, 49-3. Stetson completed 25 of 31 passes for a career-high 368 yards with two touchdowns.
"I don't think Stetson really gets affected by anything I do, you do or anybody does," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said after the game. "Stetson lives in his own world, and he does a really good job of blocking out all the noise. The guy had a flip phone, OK, in 2021. He doesn't really get into all that.
"I think that's what his kind of edge is, and he made some plays that he didn't make the right decisions on today, and he knows those. He knows his mistakes. He's got to be smart. He does things that maybe we don't ask him to do. But he did make some plays with his feet, and I think you take the good, and I'm not going to call it bad, but you take the good with his poor decisions."
