Mage Payout Odds of Winning the Preakness Stakes Likely Between 5-2 and 4-1

Mage, the winning Kentucky Derby horse, was initially expected to pay out between 5-2 and 4-1 odds in this year's Preakness contingent upon whether the early Derby favorite Forte raced or not.  Forte was scratched once again and by Friday, Mage was the -140 odds-on favorite to win.  He would pay out $850 for the Triple Crown victory.

Mage is owned by a consortium of just under 400 individuals.  One of the main co-owners is Miami Beach resident Ramiro Restrepo.

“If my guy is feeling the way he’s feeling, then on to Baltimore and crab cakes we go,” he told the Baltimore Sun following Mage's long shot win.  He was listed at 15-1 odds and our own Payton O'Brien received a nice payout on him.

“Once you start forcing things against the path that it’s supposed to be on, that’s when things don’t go according to plan,” Restrepo said. “Obviously, whose dream isn’t to chase the Triple Crown, right? … But in the end, Mage has to want the Triple Crown. So if he comes out of the race as he appears to us here, then I know [Delgado] is going to want to go to the Preakness, and all the partners are going to want to go, too, but it’s never going to be at the expense of the horse.”

“If Forte runs, you may see Mage in the 3-1 to 4-1 range,” Johnny Avello, director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings, tells GamblingToday, “and if he doesn’t, you might see him in the neighborhood of 5-2. I mean, who else is out there for him to go against now?”

“The reason Mage was a high price for the Kentucky Derby is that he had been lightly raced. You know, these 3-year-olds are improving all the time.

“This is an excellent effort for him.”
