Congress Begins Looking Into US Regulated Sports Betting Industry

(June 16, 2023) - David Payne Purdum of ESPN reports that Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) has issued letters to various professional sports league and NCAA commissioners and presidents on Thursday.

Titus, who co-chairs the Congressional Gaming Caucus, is specifically requesting information pertaining to gambling policies for 12 leagues and the NCAA.

Payne Purdum notes that her letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell specifically asks about prohibitions for affiliated individuals regarding wagering regarding betting and the league's education process and any ongoing investigations into "suspicious sports betting activity."

Leagues in receipt of the letter were the NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, PGA, ATP, Formula 1, NASCAR, UFC, WNBA and IBF.

"We wanted to get ahead of this," Titus told ESPN. "That's why we expanded it to include so many of the different sports. It seems to be one of those things that needs addressing, as we look at sports betting generally."

In addition to the uptick in gambling advertisements, some of which at times cross ethical lines by offering "free bets", the sports world has been knocked by a series of betting scandals that include Detroit Lions wagering on NFL games and inside information being used among individuals tied to college baseball.
