The NFL has warned San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs players via a memo: No gambling ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl.

The memo outlines specific rules for players traveling to play and those traveling on their personal time, emphasizing the relevance of the upcoming game in Las Vegas.

It will be tough to avoid.  This is going to be the first Super Bowl taking place in the gambling Mecca of Las Vegas, now a bona fide sports market with the Knights in the NHL and Raiders in the NFL.

The memo outlines specific rules for players traveling to play and those traveling on their personal time.

The prohibition is being described as a precautionary measure to limit the temptation associated with gambling. We'd be remiss in failing to point out that the NFL in recent years has fully embraced sports betting and it's led to some precarious situations involving players.

Just last week, New England Patriots wide receiver and former LSU Tigers standout Kayshon Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by State Police for allegedly placing nearly 9000 sports bets between the period April 6, 2022, until May 7, 2023.  He's accused of using an alias to get around an age requirement for placing wagers in Louisiana.

One of the teams playing in this past weekend's Conference Championship games, the Detroit Lions, became a primary target of enforcement activity prior to the 2023 season.  Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore were suspended as a result.

So what will the punishment be, you ask?

  •         First-time offenders betting on non-NFL games are subject to a two-game suspension without pay.
  •         First-time offenders found to have bet on NFL games are subject to an indefinite suspension of a minimum of one year.

Interestingly enough, players from other teams who happen to be in attendance for this year's big game will be allowed to gamble at their leisure.
