Are Self-Exclusions on Sportsbook Apps Leading to Multi Year Casino Bans?
In a shock tweet this week, a gentleman by the name of Kyle Cartwright is claiming that a friend partook in the much touted self-exclusion profess on various sportsbook apps....then this happened:
"For those who aren’t aware of this. My buddy banned himself from the sports betting apps. Come to find out that if u ban yourself on the apps, u are also banned from the casino. He cannot enter an MGM or Caesar’s property for 5 years. He also plays poker for a living. Incredible."
WHOA!
It's unclear if this is state-specific. For example, Legal Sports Report claimed last summer that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement had 19,304 people exclude themselves from online gaming specifically, and another 2,099 exclude themselves from both online gaming and in-person wagering at casinos.
Roughly 45% of those requested a one-year exclusion from gaming, while 49% opted for a 5-year ban and 5% self-imposed lifetime bans.
In other words, New Jersey gamblers appear to be able to control what forms of gambling they can be self-excluded from and for how long. Many other states do not appear to distinguish between types of gambling or, in the case of Pennsylvania, separate out for sports betting exclusive bans.
Jessica Welman of SBC Americas chimed in.
"Yeah ditto fantasy sports apps with sportsbooks like FD and DK. No one is gonna take the liability of someone says they want to self exclude from something."
Her reference is to the sites that started off as daily fantasy sports, FanDuel and DraftKings, evolving to become sportsbooks. Their ties to casinos are through partnerships and retail sportsbook placements as opposed to an MGM or Caesars which flat out own brick and mortar casinos while also running two of America's biggest sports betting apps.
IMakewinhappen tweeted in regard to the likely state-specific reactions:
"I have self excluded on 8 casino apps in Michigan and still play all poker sites and in the casinos. I’m confused."
Ryan Depaulo isn't buying the New Jersey segregation of gaming either.
"Yeah I’m on a one year timeout by mistake cause I banned from “wheel of fortune” bum ass casino and apparently that bans you from party poker and borgata NJ poker for that same time even though those apps let you self exclude from just casino within those clients makes no sense."
Beat_al played down the whole cause for concern entirely and offered this piece of advise:
"Believe me, just because you’re banned doesn’t mean you can’t play in the casino. Don’t show id and don’t use a players card."
