Last week, reports began surfacing that Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France.  Authorities in that nation detained Durov for four days before releasing him on Wednesday.

Preliminary charges allege criminal activity on his messaging app and barred him from leaving France pending further investigation.

Allegations against Durov, who is also a French citizen, include that his platform is being used for child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking.

Both free-speech advocates and authoritarian governments have spoken in Durov’s defense since his weekend arrest. The case has also called attention to the challenges of policing illegal activity online, and to the Russia-born Durov’s own unusual biography and multiple passports.

Betting markets related to Telegram and Durov began popping up on the Polymarket platform, four specifically.

Durov leaving France by October has seen the most action with just 41% saying it will happen.  To date, $26,000 had been wagered.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if it is confirmed that Pavel Durov has left France for any length of time between August 27, 2024, and December 31, 2024, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".

In cases where Durov may have exited French airspace on a plane, he must be confirmed to have exited the plane in a country other than France for this market to resolve to "Yes".

If Durov exits French maritime territory on a boat to international waters, this market may resolve to "Yes".

If it is not confirmed by the resolution date that Durov left France, this market will resolve to "No."

The resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.

France banning Telegram is viewed as highly unlikely with some $16,000 wagered thus far.

Pavel fleeing France won't happen, according to the gambling public.  This market has seen the most action with $523,981 bet.
