The line on the Virginia Tech vs. Miami game opened at Hurricanes -16.5 and had quickly moved to -17. Sagarin has Miami with an 86.93 rating (No. 9) plus home field advantage of 3.87 to give us 90.80 this week. The Hokies are rated No. 49 with a number of 75.28 to arrive at an anticipated line of 15.82, suggesting there could be a slight overlay here.
Virginia Tech comes into this Week 5 game 2-2 having lost a close one to Rutgers. They were the favorite in that one.
Jai Patel connected on a 24-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining to lift Rutgers to a 26-23 victory over Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech (2-2) took over at its 25-yard line after Patel’s field goal, but on the third play of the drive, quarterback Kyron Drones’ pass was intercepted by Rutgers’ Robert Longerbeam to seal the win for the Scarlet Knights.
“I was coming on the blitz and I saw the quarterback was about to throw the ball, but I was too far,” said Longerbeam, a native of Virginia. “I had to jump. When I looked up, the ball was in the air, and I got under it and went down.
“Just coming back to Virginia and being 1-0 … it meant everything to us. We put so much work into this season and to go 1-0 … means the world to us.”
Miami is starting the season 4-0 and ranking No. 7 in the new AP Poll.
The Canes are outscoring their opponents by 168 points this season, its largest point differential through four games in program history.
Cam Ward topped 15,000 career passing yards in No. 8 Miami's 50-15 rout of South Florida.
Ward tossed TD passes of 6 yards to Isaiah Horton, 5 yards to Xavier Restrepo and 76 yards to Sam Brown, the latter putting Miami (4-0) ahead for good late in the second quarter. Damien Martinez rushed for three TDs, including a pair of 1-yarders that finished long drives and built the lead to 36-15 in the third quarter.
“He’s been great for a long time,” Horton said of Ward. "As soon as he got on campus, he made his mark instantly. I love playing with him.”
Receiver Sean Atkins had 11 catches for 125 yards and also threw a 12-yard TD pass to quarterback Byrum Brown for USF (2-2).
