If Gambling is an Addiction, Why Was Pete Rose Considered an Outcast?

"The baseball legend was an example of not only the perils of gambling but also why the sports leagues’ embrace of the online-betting industry makes them predatory hypocrites."

Dave Zirin of The Nation could not have said it any better.

The legendary baseball player, Pete Rose, died this week at the age of 83.  He was "banned for life for gambling" even though a commission found he did not fix games as a manager.

Zirin writes of the conflict.

Today, we’ve come to understand Rose’s compulsion to bet on anything and everything, including baseball, as a function of addiction. Rose, however unsavory the allegations about his personal life, was a gambling addict. He needed Major League Baseball to direct him to treatment and eventually offer him an open, transparent path back into the game he loved. Instead, the league preferred him to be a living warning to players.

I interviewed Rose a decade ago for Sirius/XM radio, and he spoke to me from a Las Vegas convention-center hallway, outside a room where he was signing memorabilia. He said that later that day he would be hitting the tables. What was memorable was how caffeinated Rose was—hyper, funny, ingratiating, and clearly an experienced spinner of yarns. One could easily see him at corporate retreats, celebrity golf courses, and rubber-chicken dinners charming crowds for a paycheck. After his ban, Charlie Hustle was really about that hustle, agreeing to attend countless baseball autograph shows and grabbing for any payday. He discovered an outlaw infamy and sustained his damaged ego by basking in the adoration of his defenders.

Premier League Partner Sorare Pleads Not Guilty to Providing Unlicensed Gambling to Those in UK

Premier League partner, French-based Sorare, has pleaded not guilty to three charges of providing unlicensed gambling activities to British consumers.

The case, brought forward by the Gambling Commission, will go to trial next summer in Birmingham Magistrates' Court and is expected to last for seven days.

Sorare entered formal not guilty pleas at a recent court hearing. Sorare maintains that it does not require a licence to operate in Britain, asserting that it does not provide gambling facilities to UK users.

“We firmly deny any claims that Sorare is a gambling product under UK laws. The commission has misunderstood our business and wrongly determined that gambling laws apply to Sorare. We cannot comment further whilst legal proceedings are underway.”

The charges allege that Sorare offered "a remote facility for gambling to consumers within Great Britain, without holding a licence" over three separate periods between 7 February 2022 and 5 April 2024. These actions potentially violate the 2005 Gambling Act.

Poker Player Conspired w/ Banned NBA Hoopster Jontay Porter in Betting Scheme

A poker player has entered a guilty plea in connection to basketball player Jontay Porter's lifetime ban from the NBA for betting on games.

Long Phi Pham ("Bruce"), who claims to be a poker pro, was arrested at JFK airport and charged with wire fraud conspiracy, a federal crime, in June. He admitted to the charge on Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Porter pleaded guilty back in July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a federal criminal case tied to the betting scandal.

The charging documents say that Porter “had amassed significant gambling debts” to Pham and others. The document says that one of the people still at large encouraged Porter to clear the debts by “withdrawing from certain games prematurely to ensure that under prop bets on [Porter’s] performance were successful.
