The UEFA Champions League knockout stage is just getting going and the world’s best are preparing to light up Europe’s grandest stage. In the upcoming playoff round, there are plenty of contests sure to whet the appetite. Reigning champions Real Madrid will face off against 2023 winners Manchester City with the two clubs meeting in the tournament for the third straight year. Elsewhere, German giants Bayern Munich will aim to avoid a potential banana skin as they face off with Celtic at a raucous Parkhead.

But while teams are on the hunt for glory, players are also on the prowl for personal accolades. This season's top scorer race promises to be a tight one, with the current top five all separated by just two goals. But who do the bookies think will emerge with the Golden Boot? Let's take a look.

Robert Lewandowski

At 35, Robert Lewandowski remains a colossus in front of goal. The Barcelona striker has reclaimed his place as the frontrunner of many online sportsbook providers, and for good reason. He has netted an impressive nine goals in eight games throughout the initial league phase, prompting a top sportsbook in Canada to list him as the short-priced +225 favorite to emerge with the Golden Boot.

The Pole's clinical finishing remains unparalleled, even as he enters the twilight of his career. Whether it’s a tap-in, a header, or a curling effort from the edge of the box, he continues to deliver at the highest level. With the Blaugrana already through to the last 16, the former Bayern Munich striker is well positioned to continue racking up the goals as the tournament progresses. However, as the Catalonians haven't made it past the quarterfinals in five years, his finishing with the Golden Boot is by no means a foregone conclusion.

Harry Kane

After his high-profile move to Bayern Munich 18 months ago, Harry Kane seamlessly adapted to life in Germany, taking over the goal-scoring mantle left by the aforementioned Lewandowski. Now in his second season in Bavaria, The Englishman sits just behind the Barcelona striker in the race for top scorer, having scored one goal fewer. The Three Lions skipper offers more than goals, of course; his exceptional positioning, link-up play, and penalty-taking ability make him a complete forward tailor-made for Champions League football.

With Bayern’s attacking firepower around him, including Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise, the former Spurs man will have plenty of opportunities to add to his tally. Plus, with the competition's final being held in Bayern's Allianz Arena home, Kane may well break his ongoing trophy curse and he could do so as the tournament's top scorer.

Erling Haaland

The reigning Premier League Golden Boot winner, Erling Haaland, is always a contender whenever goals are involved. Despite a slightly quieter group-stage campaign by his sky-high standards, the Norwegian behemoth’s odds of +700 speak to his potential to leave a lasting imprint on the knockout rounds. City’s attacking juggernaut, combined with their lethal striker's incredible pace and power, makes him a nightmare for defenders.

Haaland has enjoyed a record-breaking start to life in England over the last two and a half years. However, his third season at the Etihad has brought unprecedented problems. Pep Guardiola's side has stuttered like never before this term, currently sitting down in fifth in the domestic standings, as well as barely squeezing their way through the knockout round of the Champions League as well. They have a difficult playoff round clash with Real Madrid looming on the horizon, and if they can somewhat put their woeful recent form to one side and progress, then Haaland suddenly becomes a major player to win the Golden Boot.

Serhou Guirassy

Serhou Guirassy might be a surprise name in this chasing pack, but his performances in the league stage have made it impossible to ignore him. The Borussia Dortmund striker has been in sensational form since making the move from domestic rivals Stuttgart in the summer, proving he belongs at Europe’s top table. He is currently level with Lewandowski on nine goals in the Champions League, a return neither he nor his new club could have imagined when he was snapped up.

Despite his impressive scoring rate, the Guinean's odds of +700 reflect the fact that the bookies don't really fancy Dortmund to make a deep run in the tournament. Last term, they made it all the way to the final, and had they had their current striker in the starting lineup, they may well have won. Instead, Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Fullkrug missed a slew of chances and handed the title to Real Madrid.

This year, they have a difficult knockout round tie ahead of them in the form of Portuguese champions Sporting CP. It wouldn't be a surprise if they lost, ending Guirassy's Golden Boot hopes almost immediately.
