Georgia lawmakers on Thursday were deciding whether to let voters decide a constitutional amendment that could legalize sports gambling.

Legislators faced a key deadline Thursday. It was the last day for legislation to pass either the House or Senate and advance to the other legislative chamber for consideration this year.

Some top proposals have already moved ahead, including an effort to limit lawsuits and a school safety bill that supporters hope will prevent future school shootings. Bills that would ban expansion of mining near the Okefenokee Swamp and require law enforcement to collect DNA samples from any detainee subject to immigration detention appear unlikely to advance.

Other considerations: Georgia’s public schools and colleges would be banned from having any programs or activities that advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion under Senate Bill 120.

Measures that failed to pass Thursday could still be resurrected later this year, but it becomes more difficult. Because this is the first year of a two-year session, measures could also be considered next year.

So what happened with sports betting?

The pair of sports gambling bills were finally green-lit by the committee between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m but never went before the full chamber.

Translation: No sports betting in Georgia in 2025.
