Odds on Who Will Become the Next Pope
Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died just one day after his surprise public appearance on Easter Sunday. The Vatican confirmed his death Monday morning EST.
He was 88, and had suffered a serious bout of double pneumonia this year, but his death came as a shock after he had been driven around St. Peter's Square in an open-air popemobile to greet cheering crowds on Easter Sunday. It was his first public appearance since being hospitalized on February 14. Doctors would confirm the Pope had pneumonia in both lungs just three days later.
"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis," Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican's TV channel.
"At 7:35 (0535 GMT) this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father."
Gamblers, perhaps reluctant to place early bets on the Next Pope, were more willing to do so on Monday and BetOnline did anticipate a flood of wagers on the next Pope.

Global bookmaker BetOnline.ag has been offering "Next Pope Odds" since 2022, but betting interest really started to heat up during the past two months when Pope Francis' health began to decline.
There are now 55 names with odds on the board, and you can even wager on which continent the next pope will come from and what his papal name will be.
