Yet another gambling controversy involving a prominent athlete is emerging this week.

From IBT

John Mateer, the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, is currently at the centre of a growing controversy following allegations of sports gambling linked to his Venmo account that have surfaced online. Screenshots shared on social media show transactions from November 2022 with descriptions such as 'Sports gambling' and 'Sports gambling (UCLA vs USC)', suggesting possible betting activity.

While these claims have sparked widespread attention and raised serious questions about potential NCAA violations, neither Mateer nor the University of Oklahoma has confirmed the authenticity of the transactions. The NCAA has also not made any official statements, leaving Mateer's future in collegiate football uncertain as the situation remains under investigation.

Oklahoma officials are aware of Mateer’s Venmo activity referencing "sports gambling" and includes a reference to a specific game, according to Pete Thamel, ESPN college football senior writer.

Thamel goes on to note that Mateer has consistently denied to OU officials ever being involved with gambling, per a source.

Ohio Player Prop Bet Ban Fears (11939 Impressions This Week)

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine demanded requested it and now the Casino Control Commission is in the process of drafting a rule to prohibit some player prop bets.

“The Commission is currently drafting a rule to prohibit player-specific micro wagers,” Assistant General Counsel Caty Abbott told Legal Sports Report Friday. “When we believe we have a draft that will accomplish that, then the Commission will follow the statutory process for rule promulgation.”

Microbetting player prop bets are very short-term, event-specific wagers tied to an individual player's performance.

DeWine noted the ongoing investigation into two Cleveland Guardians pitchers who potentially broke MLB sports betting rules in his request.
