AI in a casino

Unless you were living under a rock throughout 2025, it's pretty clear what the entire world is focused on when it comes to technology. Think two letters: AI

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we do things. The gaming sector has also employed AI technology with enhancements anticipated in 2026.

The Importance of Regulation

Most experts agree that AI must be regulated or else risk the technology completely getting out of control.

When Anthropic's Claude Opus 4 model was provided with information that it would be shut down and replaced by another AI model, Claude Opus 4 reportedly tried to blackmail the human decision-maker 96 percent of the time.

Gaming regulators will need to monitor potential misuses

Some of the more prominent hubs include:

  • Malta
  • Curacao
  • Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which exists just outside of Montreal

While Malta has played a leading role in Web gambling regulation worldwide over the last decade plus, Curcao and Kahnawake were there practically from the beginning.

Whether it's the first ever sportsbook regulated online in North America way back in 2000 or today's more tech-savvy online casino brands the likes of the Impressario casino, the Kahnawake license ensures certain safeguards are in place.

For the time being at least, The Kahnawake Gaming Commission’s regulatory materials deal almost exclusively with standards, player protection and technical compliance.  No AI-related governance language is yet incorporated, but that is subject to change.

Gaming regulators will need to pay special attention to the possibility of AI being used for nefarioius reasons. It's already the worst kept secret that AI has helped operators to tilt the playing field for their own advantage.

Malta appears to be taking the lead here as the MGA recently advanced draft guidance requiring AI risk assessments for Malta‑licensed online casino operators that involve the mandating of annual compliance audits for AI systems related to personalization, fraud detection, and more.

AI Use and Misuse

In casino gambling, both online and at brick and mortar venues, operators can use Artificial Intelligence to track a customer's betting behavior as well as somewhat accurately determining when a player is most likely to chase losses or increase their bets.

A less reputable casino operator will push bonuses precisely at the point where a customer is most vulnerable or incorporate trigger language such as "you are so close to winning right now".

Kasra Ghaharian, Director of Research at UNLV’s International Gaming Institute, has been at the forefront of AI technology, specifically as it is applied to gaming.

Last summer, Ghaharian highlighted the positive use examples of AI while speaking with NPR.

“We’re seeing AI applications in casino cameras for example, to help detect money laundering, collusion, and fraud,” Ghaharian said.

“We’re also seeing it in back-of-house operations, from copywriting for websites and marketing materials, to even game designers and developers using it to create new assets for slot machines.”

But he also addressed the potential pitfalls.

“[Developers and casinos] are going to use AI, statistics, and machine learning to augment [their services], but we need to be really careful in terms of where we draw the line,” Ghaharian cautioned.

He added, “When is it just attracting someone to come to your casino, versus exploiting a vulnerability, because gambling can be potentially addictive, right?”

The AI Online Casino

It didn't take long for casino operators to start implementing Artificial Intelligence into their actual brand promotion.

The focus in 2025 was on personalized play, smarter game recommendations, and even enhanced user experience (sometimes referred to as UX).

In addition to overall usability, UX incorporates the following:

  • Navigation – Giving players the ability to find what they are looking for super fast.
  • Performance - How well does the site load and respond?
  • Clarity - Obvious outcomes achieved.
  • Providing Enjoyment - Trustworthy and stress-free play.

AI can anticipate what you want before you even make a move. It can auto-suggest certain games and determine at which point you are most likely to abandon a session.

A few brands profess to being built specifically around AI technology while others explicitly integrate Artificial Intelligence into marketing campaigns through the promotion of AI-powered lobbies, automated table games and tailored player experiences

The House Edge is Still Unbeatable Long Term and AI Won't Help You Overcome This Fact

AI does help sports gamblers the most by providing ways to compare odds vs. fair probabilities as well as detecting line variances or inefficiencies. The technology can also point out market overreactions.

Machine learning models are trained to spot critical components leading up to a matchup related to recent team and player performance, rest, injuries, weather aspects that can influence play as well as closing line values.

With poker, AI is n extremely powerful tool as well.

One can determine optimal bet sizes in addition to bluff frequencies.

For the online gambler in general, AI can be used to gain an edge in the bonus process by helping calculate the true expected value (EV) of a particular promotional offer.

A US$2000 free cash offer might look like a "no brainer" on the surface, but AI can determine how the rollover requirement factors in to better grasp your overall reward potential. A $50 free play with a nominal rollover could prove to be more gratifying based on AI findings perhaps.
