UConn basketball fans

The map below, courtesy of BetOnline, is based on geotagged X data since the Final Four was official, tracking tweets, hashtags and direct keyword phrases about who fans were rooting for among the four remaining teams in the Men’s NCAA Tournament.

For example, "I'm rooting for Arizona”, "Let’s go Wolverines”. Over 3.6 million tweets were tracked.

Here are some things that caught my eye based on the state-by-state breakdown:

  • It’s impossible to prove, but perhaps the amazing comeback and game-winning shot by UConn made them the rooting favorite.
  • There are two Big Ten teams in the Final Four and the state of Ohio is rooting for neither. Other Midwest Big Ten states are rooting for either Illinois or Michigan.
  • The state of North Carolina is now rooting for Arizona.

Here's the state-by-state breakdown:

UConn (20): Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri NH, NJ, NY, Ohio, Pennsylvania, RI, Vermont, Virginia.

Arizona (13): Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, NC, Oregon, SC, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.

Illinois (11): Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, ND, Tennessee, Oklahoma.

Michigan (6): Michigan,
