Brightline’s Vegas Train Will Reshape US Short Haul Flights
Sunday April 5, 2026 (2 pm EDT)
Brightline is not some pipe dream as the train is already a successful reality here along the East Coast of Florida. Las Vegas looks to duplicate that success.
Kyle Stewart of LiveandLetsFly.com writes:
"The aviation and travel press has done what it always does: treated this as an infrastructure milestone. “Look, rail is coming to America. California is building the future.” It’s a legitimate story. Brightline West is a genuine achievement for the US and a rebuke to decades of American underinvestment in passenger rail – if its federal loans materialize. It’s less of a response to vast European networks and more of the most pointed American solution possible."

While technically a flight between LAX and Vegas is just one hour, parking, TSA, boarding, deplaning, baggage claim tacks on another two hours on a good day.
Then there's the price: $80 to $250 overall depending on day of week and added expenses.
The drive is obviously going to be cheaper (just over 4 hours).
Now enter Briteline.
It's two hours (Union Station to downtown Vegas (no airport hassle). The pricing will be competitive as well, not to mention nicer travel accommodations in most cases.
Stewart points to other possible point-to-point destinations not involving Vegas but one that does involve what's becoming another hot casino destination, Detroit.
- Chicago-Detroit. 280 miles. Similar profile. Regional hub with high frequency. Current flight time: 1 hour. Train time: 2-2.5 hours. Cheaper. No airport hassle. This is a dead route for airlines once rail infrastructure exists.
He suggests the potential for 5-10% of all commercial air traffic becoming rail-oriented in the next 10-15 years.
"That’s not a marginal impact. That’s structural."
Brightline's South Florida to Orlando service is not without its flaws.
There are plenty of news stories of folks stopping on the tracks or jumping in front of these trains.
Orlando, unlike Vegas, is not the easiest place to get around without a vehicle either.
Some of us still choose to drive between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando for that very reason.

Internet Betting is a Bad Bet and a Public Health Crisis | Opinion
Sunday April 5, 2026 (12:20 pm EDT)
It's like going back in time for many of us old timers here at Gambling911.com.
The name Jim Leach sends chills down our spines.
Leach is the former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa (1977–2007). And for much of the early part of this century, he spent his time preaching about the ills of internet gambling.
Fast forward to 2026 and the activity is not only regulated in Iowa, some would say it's completely out of control.
Dare we say Leach may have been right all along (gulp).
Iowa was center stage for one of the first college sports betting scandals since the U.S. Supreme Court abolished The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May of 2018. Iowa, we would note, was one of the first states to launch online gambling after the SCOTUS decision.
In an opinion piece appearing Sunday at the Des Moines Register, Guest columnist Greg Ganske writes:
"Online internet betting, especially on sports, is a perfect storm of combining the addictive allure of gambling with habit-forming smartphone use. The average American spends 4.5 hours a day on his or her phone. Combine that with the allure of online gambling and you have a toxic brew. What’s resulted isn’t just a bigger gambling market but a growing public health crisis, with young men as its main casualty."

Premier League Clubs Facing £80m Shirt Sponsor Void Amid Gambling Ban
Sunday April 5, 2026 (12:02 pm EDT)
Nine Premier League clubs have yet to secure shirt sponsorship deals following a ban on gambling advertisements that is going into effect.
The imminent ban on shirt advertising from gambling companies is having a significant impact on all clubs’ commercial returns, as Matt Hughes of The Guardian reports.
"Gambling operators, particularly those serving Asian markets, have for several years been willing to pay far more than other companies to sponsor Premier League clubs in order to secure global brand visibility.
"After a consultation with the government the Premier League agreed to introduce a voluntary ban three years ago, which was delayed until the start of next season to give clubs time to find new sponsors, and the removal of gambling firms from the market has led to intense competition among clubs at lower prices.
"Of the 10 top-flight clubs with gambling sponsors this season only Bournemouth have announced a replacement, with the club’s stadium sponsor Vitality moving on to the shirt in a cut-price deal that is likely to be replicated elsewhere."

WEC Chair: ‘You Cannot Bet on an Election in Wisconsin!’ And You Risk Having Your Ballot Thrown Out?
Saturday April 4, 2026 (10:05 pm EDT)
With the rise of online prediction market platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, people can bet on just about everything. Currently, the sites have seen more than $30,000 in combined wagers on whether a Democrat or Republican will win Wisconsin’s race for governor.
The chair of the state’s elections commission insists such wagers are still "illegal".
And she went as far as to warn residents via her social media that they cannot do so, regardless of whether platforms like Kalshi are accessible in the state.
“I know it’s all the rage to bet on everything, but you cannot bet on an election in Wisconsin! If you do, your ballot can be challenged & thrown out.”
She added: J“So go vote and save your $ for playing Euchre with your uncle!”

Maine Online Gambling Sites Will No Longer Allow Credit Card Deposits
Saturday April 4, 2026 (10:05 pm EDT)
Maine becomes the latest state to prohibit credit card deposits when registering with an online gambling site or refreshing with a new deposit.
Governor Janet Mills signed a bill into law Friday that would prevent transactions via credit cards such as Visa or Mastercard. American Express traditionally has not allowed its card to be used for gambling related activities online.
Supporters point to research that shows use of credit cards in online gambling can directly lead to higher wagering amounts, increased gambling activity, and significant financial consequences.
Major operators like FanDuel and BetMGM have already started implementing national credit card bans as of early 2026, and DraftKings instituted a ban in August 2025.
The prohibition won't go into effect until some time later in the year with an exact date yet to be disclosed.

Half of South Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Opposed to Gambling Expansion in the State
Saturday April 4, 2026 (11:30 am EDT)
With the South Carolina Women's Gamecocks playing in yet another Championship game on Sunday, we take a look at the GOP gubernatorial candidates positions related to gambling expansion in South Carolina.
The 2026 governor’s race in the state is an open-seat contest, as term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster cannot seek reelection. Given the state’s strong Republican lean, the GOP candidates’ positions on gambling expansion are likely to carry the most weight.
Nancy Mace leads slightly and is open to a voter referendum while her closest challenger, Attorney General Alan Wilson, ain't having any of it.
“When it comes to brick-and-mortar casinos, I’ve traveled this state,” he said. “I’ve talked extensively with law enforcement leaders, I’ve talked extensively with the faith community. They have grave concerns about brick-and-mortar casinos coming here because we have seen in other states that it brings criminal elements.”
“I think it would be detrimental to our state as a whole to have brick-and-mortar casinos here.”
