Senator Contacts Leagues Over 'Gambling's Ugly Takeover'
Friday April 10, 2026 (11;25 pm EDT)
In letters to the commissioners of the NFL, NBA, NCAA, MLB, NHL and MLS, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, asked the leagues to provide information by May 1 about their partnerships with both sportsbooks and prediction markets and how they are safeguarding sporting integrity, preventing gambling addiction and protecting athletes from abuse.
"Since the federal ban on sports gambling -- a ban supported by the leagues -- was overturned eight years ago, gambling has permeated every aspect of the game," he wrote. "The consequences of this rampant rise of sports gambling have been accelerating addiction, threats to players and even the corruption of the game."
Blumenthal added that the growing prediction market space -- where users can trade on the yes/no outcome of events including sports -- has "only made the problem worse."

The day after President Trump announced a sudden pause of strikes against Iran last month, the White House warned staff against improperly leveraging their positions to place well-timed bets in futures markets.
The warning came in a staff-wide email from the White House Management Office on March 24, according to people familiar with the matter. The day before, Trump had announced the pause via Truth Social. About 15 minutes before the sudden shift in policy, a mysterious influx of future bets came in.
Prediction market bets placed on the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and on the Iran war have raised concerns that government officials could be profiting from insider trading.
More than $500 million in crude oil futures trades reportedly were made in the roughly 15 minutes before President Donald Trump announced a pause in hostilities against Iran on March 23.

Readers React to News That Senator Tuberville Accepted Donations From Chumba Casino Parent Company
Friday April 10, 2026 (10:35 am EDT)
Alabama's only legal casino is controlled by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. As such, the news that the state's Senator Tommy Tuberville accepted donations from a sweepstakes casino made headlines, especially in light of Alabama's efforts to prohibit such websites from being accessible to state residents.
Tuberville received a series of big campaign donations last month but few were more controversial than the $150,000 from a Birmingham businessman and $30,000 from an online gambling company, VGW Luckyland Inc., a subsidiary of a huge Australian gambling company.
VGW owns the sweepstakes casino LuckyLand Slots, Chumba Casino and Global Poker.
In February, VGW Chief Executive Officer and founder Laurence Escalante was was charged with aggravated assault, engaging in family violence, destruction of property, and possession of cocaine and MDMA with intent to sell or supply. He is accused of assaulting his girlfriend.
Escalante denies any wrongdoing.
Tuberville has officially announced his campaign for Governor of Alabama in the 2026 election, forgoing a reelection bid for his Senate seat. He is running as a Republican and is on the ballot for the primary on May 19, 2026, centering his campaign on an "Alabama First" agenda.
"Alabama is notorious for taking bribes from casinos, Porch Creek to name a few," one reader commented.
"Now why would out of state gambling interests support a Florida resident running for governor of Alabama?" another asked, referencing news reports that Tuberville spends a significant amount of time in the Sunshine State.

Cardi B Reaches Out to Estranged Husband Offset Following Casino Shooting
Friday April 10, 2026 (10:35 am EDT)
According to TMZ, recording artist Cardi B reached out to her estranged husband Offset after he was shot outside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida Monday.. The two have recently been engaged in a divorce battle.
Police arrested rapper Lil Tjay on a disorderly conduct charge, however, nobody has been charged for the actual shooting as of Friday.
Offset is dealing with a new legal challenge while recovering from a recent shooting incident in Florida, as a Detroit casino pursues action over an alleged unpaid gambling debt.
Court documents first obtained by TMZ show that MotorCity Casino & Hotel has filed a lawsuit claiming the artist failed to repay a $100,000 credit line extended during a visit in March 2024. The filing states that Offset used the funds as part of a standard casino marker arrangement, which allows patrons to continue gambling with borrowed money under agreed terms.
According to the complaint, the agreement permitted the casino to recover any outstanding balance directly from the customer’s bank account if the debt was not settled in a timely manner. The casino alleges that when the balance remained unpaid, staff made efforts to reach the rapper before attempting to collect the funds electronically.
That withdrawal attempt, the lawsuit claims, was unsuccessful due to insufficient funds in the designated account.
