Litmus Test

Bob Baffert has won more Kentucky Derby races (6) than any trainer entering a horse in this year's Kentucky Derby.  But his Litmus Test is being treated like the red-headed step child of his two entries, the other being Potente at rather long odds as well (28-1).

Litmus Test will pay out 41-1 odds.

His 7th place finish at the Arkansas Derby, Litmus Test's most recent start, doesn't help his case.

Previous to that one, he finished 3rd in the Rebel Stakes.

Litmus Test's only graded race win was at the 2025 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2).

Martin Garcia is set to ride Litmus Test.   He does have six Kentucky Derby starts but zero wins to show for it.  Nonetheless, Garcia did finish 2nd with Lookin At Lucky in 2010.

Other Pros

  • Can run close to the pace or just off it.
  • Has been somewhat reliable in prep races leading up to this year's Kentucky Derby.
  • Litmus Test has a solid number of starts compared to lightly raced rivals.

Other Cons

  • Hasn’t clearly beaten top-tier contenders in a major prep.
  • Not elite speed figures.
