California's former Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, is now the sudden -130 favorite to become that state's next governor.

BetOnline had made Becerra a co-favorite along with fellow Democrate Tom Steyer at even odds following this past Tuesday's CNN debate performance.

Gambling911.com's article covering Becerra's rise in the polls and in the odds, as well as the attacks on him from both sides of the aisle, has seen 128,580 impressions in just a 48 hour period.  The average article on Gambling911.com sees just over 1000 impressions within that same period.

Six former Biden administration officials, all of whom were granted anonymity to speak candidly about a former colleague, acknowledged the subject of Becerra’s unlikely rise has come to dominate their group chats and conversations. “It gets the biggest laugh every time we send around a poll,” the first former official told Politico.

“He ran one of the most consequential agencies in government at the height of the pandemic,” the former official continued. “But he took a backseat to Dr. Fauci and his team, didn’t visibly lead on implementation and had to go through layers to get to POTUS even as a Cabinet member.”

Another former official told the outlet that Becerra “is very good at being a politician. When he was attorney general, the formula was: you file a lawsuit. When you’re a member of Congress, you help your constituents and you introduce legislation. When people noticed he wasn’t cut out for [the Cabinet] was when there was a crisis — it was clear he didn’t know how to handle that.”

Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor of the state, has seen his odds stay at 12/1 while each of the remaining candidates odds dropped close to six points, though Chad Bianco remained at 65/1 odds as the biggest long shot.

Current California Governor Gavin Newsom has yet to endorse a candidate.

“I‘m focused on diapers,” Newsom told reporters on Friday when asked about Becerra’s recent emergence as a frontrunner.

The latest odds at BetOnline were showing the following:

Xavier Becerra -130

Tom Steyer +115

Steve Hilton 12/1

Matt Mahan 20/1

Katie Porter 28/1

Chad Bianco 65/1
