Sweepstakes Casinos Safe in Oklahoma as Governor Vetoes Ban Bill, Odds Less Favorable in Louisiana
Wednesday May 13, 2026 (5:39 pm EDT)
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt has vetoed SB 1589, a bill targeting sweepstakes casinos on Wednesday. Stitt argued the bill was “so broad that it criminalizes everyday apps people use for fun” and “unnecessarily creates a new felony and extends criminal liability to businesses and service providers.” Stitt also wrote that the bill’s “vague and overbroad approach creates uncertainty for businesses operating in good faith and discourages innovation and investment in our state.”

Colorado Set to Restrict Deposits on Sports Betting Apps
Wednesday May 13, 2026 (5:03 pm EDT)
Colorado is poised to become the first state to limit the number of daily deposits a gambler can make in a sports-betting app after lawmakers sent a bill aimed at curbing addiction to Gov. Jared Polis. The bill would limit gamblers to making up to six deposits per day, with no limit on the value of each. Senate Bill 131 would also ban push notifications that solicit bets or deposits on gambling apps — another first-in-the-nation measure.

UFC’s Dana White Urges Trump to Revisit Gambling Loss Deduction Cap
Wednesday May 13, 2026 (4:58 pm EDT)
UFC President and CEO Dana White has sent a letter to President Trump “asking him to help reverse” the 90% limit on gambling loss deductions for U.S. taxpayers that became law in 2025. Previously, taxpayers could deduct 100% of their losses against their winnings. The change to the tax code made via the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in 2025 only allows taxpayers to deduct 90% of their losses, meaning “they could end up with a bigger tax bill and paying taxes on money they never actually won.” White in the letter said, “The change has knock-on effects for businesses like mine. The UFC supports a healthy, legal sports betting market to drive fan engagement, broadcast value, and sponsorships. When legal betting is discouraged, it hurts the ecosystem we’ve spent years building in partnership with state regulators and licensed operators.”

Pulitzer-Winning Newsrooms Are Quietly Publishing Mountains of Gambling Slop
Wednesday May 13, 2026 (4:52 pm EDT)
A large network of prominent regional newspapers has posted thousands of low-quality articles promoting gambling and prediction markets — and is pretending it's journalism. A Popular Information investigation found that Advance Local, which owns The Oregonian, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Star-Ledger, and several other award-winning newspapers, has quietly published more than 17,000 online articles since 2022 pushing promo codes for sports books, online casinos and, more recently, prediction markets. The Patriot-News, for example, won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for its landmark reporting on the sex crimes of Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and publishes online at PennLive.com. That publication was found to have appeared prominently on news feeds with articles that included "Claim the Kalshi promo code and land a bonus in a flash.” The listed correspondent published a nearly identical promo article about UFC 328 for The Star-Ledger. Manhunt for Arizona Man Who Faked Cartel Kidnapping Over Gambling Debt
Tuesday May 12, 2026 (10:09 pm EDT)
An Arizona man convicted in a bizarre fake cartel kidnapping hoax is being sought by authorities after prosecutors say he fled before he could be sentenced. Mark Michael Ellis, 33, of Prescott, Ariz., was convicted by a Yavapai County jury on May 7 on charges related to the alleged fake kidnapping involving bogus ransom demands and false claims that he had been abducted by a Mexican cartel in January 2025. Ellis even placed a Facetime to his employer from what he claimed was a basement where the cartel was holding him as a hostage. That location turned out to be his girlfriend's garage. Investigators linked the kidnapping hoax to gambling debts and methamphetamine use.

Hammond Indiana Alleged 'Enforcer' in Sports Betting Ring Reportedy Hobnobbed With Elected Officials
Tuesday May 12, 2026 (10:09 pm EDT)
An alleged enforcer in a Northwestern Indiana sports betting bust appears in photographs with top regional elected officials including a Region police chief and recent sheriff's candidate as well as a top labor union officials. Michael Campbell agreed last week to waive his right to a detention hearing and will remain incarcerated until his case is resolved. Prosecutors also accuse Campbell of exhibiting “erratic behavior,” specifically when chasing an undercover agent on April 9 in his car for about an hour, at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The business is said to have used threats and intimidation to collect funds, according to court filings.

Missouri AG Seizes Over $58K From Gas Station Slot Machines in Sting Operation
Tuesday May 12, 2026 (10:09 pm EDT)
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced Tuesday afternoon that her office seized 35 gas station gaming devices and $58,815 from five gas stations across the state in a sting operation done in conjunction with several law enforcement agencies. Three of the five gas stations are in mid-Missouri: the Eagle Stops on North Providence Road in Columbia and North Shore Drive in Lake Ozark, and Woody's Pub and Grub in Ashland. "This remains a high priority for our office in conjunction with the highway patrol and all these local departments because these machines are illegal, but also, they become an attractive place for other criminal activity," Hanaway said Tuesday.
