Shock New Poll Has James Talarico Up 3 Points Over James Paxton in Texas Senate Race: GOP Still Favored at -165

Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) holds a 3-point edge over state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in the closely watched Texas Senate race, according to a new poll conducted by the Texas Pulse in conjunction with Texas A&M University's Bush School of Government & Public Service and ReconMR.

The survey, released Tuesday, found that 47 percent of 807 respondents said they would vote for Talarico if the election were held now. Forty-four percent said they would vote for Paxton, while 2 percent said they would back another candidate.

While no Democrats said they would vote for Paxton, 9 percent of Republicans said they would back Talarico.

Oddsmakers at BetOnline still had Paxton priced at -165 and Talarico paying out US$135 for every US$100 bet should the Democrat win.

U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton over sitting Republican Sen. John Cornyn shortly before the primary runoff election last month, which greatly contributed to Cornyn’s bruising primary loss.

Paxton had been impeached by the state House of Representatives, though the Texas state Senate acquitted him.  The Texas Attorney General was also accused of infidelity in the process of a messy divorce with his wife.

Republicans have tried to portray Talarico as too liberal and out of touch with Texas voters — even going so far as to criticize the Democrat for being a vegan in a state known for its love of barbecue.

Republicans have also criticized Talarico for having said, “God is non-binary” when defending transgender people in the legislature and that there are at least six sexes.

A Democrat has not been elected as Senator in the Lone Star State since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.
