US President Barack Obama was the biggest recipient of BP dollars in 2008, according to reports that surfaced on Wednesday.

British Petroleum's ruptured oil rig continues pumping thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, endangering coastlines in states that line the Gulf Coast.

The top recipient of BP-related donations during the 2008 presidential election was Barack Obama, who collected $71,000, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

Obama was a near even favorite to win a second term in office come 2012 according to odds featured at the Sportsbook.com website.

According to press secretary Robert Gibbs, the money was given by employees of the company and not the company itself.
