If Graham Platner does in fact drop out of the midterm race for Maine Senator, who will replace him on the Democratic side?
Patrick Dempsey sits among the favorites, though with relatively long odds of 9-1 for a payout potential of $900 on a $100 bet.
The number-crunchers at BetOnline already have a list of candidates and each's respective odds. There's a heavy favorite in Troy Jackson, but next on the list is Dempsey. an actor known as "McDreamy" from the hit show Grey's Anatomy.
Born in Lewiston, Dempsey is an unlikely replacement for Platner. He has occasionally attended events with politicians like President Joseph R. Biden Jr. He also collaborated with Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, on a campaign against proposed cuts to federal Medicaid funding last year.
“The Lewiston native has long maintained strong ties to Maine through both his acting career and his charitable work with the Dempsey Center,” wrote Maine Wire’s Jon Featherston, who noted that “outside traditional political circles,” Dempsey’s name is being taken seriously.
He continued, “Unlike many of the political figures being discussed, Dempsey enjoys widespread name recognition and a broadly positive public image. Political observers note that Dempsey could immediately attract national media attention, energize Democratic donors, and potentially appeal to women voters, independents, and those looking for a political outsider.”
A former girlfriend of Platner accused him of rape in recent days. In response, the Democratic Party withdrew its financial support and endorsements for the candidate. Prominent supporters, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, have also rescinded their endorsements as Platner faces mounting scrutiny.
