House Ways and Means Chairman Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) on Wednesday announced his committee would host a hearing on tax proposals related to legislation to legalize Internet gambling. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, May 19, according to The Hill.

Companion legislation would impose gambling licensing fees and certain information reporting and other requirements on gamblers and online gambling sites.

Current legislation, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, prohibits banking institutions in the U.S. from knowingly accepting payments in connection with Internet gambling.

Enforcement of the UIGEA was to take effect on June 1, 2010.
