It isn’t difficult to understand how the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports has become such a polarizing and highly-politicized topic.
A clear example of this is Lia Thomas, who transitioned while swimming at the University of Pennsylvania. The impact on her performance metrics was stark:
- Thomas was ranked 65th nationally in the men's 500-yard freestyle but rose to 1st in the women’s division.
- Thomas was ranked 554th nationally in the men's 200-yard freestyle but reached 5th in the women’s division.
Fast-forward four years, and this topic has become a major flashpoint among WNBA players and coaches. The tension was recently on display when Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham stated that biological men do not belong in women’s sports, while Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a sideline t-shirt that read: Trans Kids Belong.
Recently, French basketball player Julie Tetart became the focus of the WNBA trans athlete debate. The 34-year-old center, who transitioned in 2021, entirely dominated France's professional basketball league last season, averaging an incredible 21.2 points and 20.2 rebounds per game.
Critics argue it’s time for the WNBA to "put its money where its mouth is." If the league is truly committed to transgender inclusion, one would expect Tetart to receive a roster spot next season.
