Circa Owner Derek Stevens Calls Prediction Markets a Joke

Thursday August 13, 2026 (7:31 pm EDT)

Stevens argues these platforms act like illegal bookmakers, avoiding federal excise taxes, league data fees, state gaming taxes, compliance costs, and per-wager charges that burden regulated operators. He warns the regulatory workaround isn't sustainable, even as users enjoy lower costs. The comments fueled debate among bettors, with some defending competition's benefits and others questioning the uneven tax playing field, highlighting tensions in U.S. gambling between innovation and fair oversight.

Two More Plead Guilty in Sprawling Basketball Game-Fixing Case

Wednesday August 12, 2026 (9:54 pm EDT)

Bradley Ezewiro and Alberto Laureano pleaded guilty in federal court in Philadelphia to bribery-related charges stemming from the sprawling basketball game-fixing investigation.  Their alleged roles were somewhat different:  Ezewiro is a former Saint Louis University basketball player. Prosecutors say he joined the scheme in 2024 while playing for Saint Louis and also worked with another fixer to identify other players who could be bribed to manipulate games.  Laureano is described by prosecutors as a “fixer.” He allegedly recruited basketball players into the scheme and sometimes personally delivered bribe payments to them.  The larger case is substantial: 26 people were charged, including 20 basketball players, over an alleged multiyear operation involving NCAA basketball and China's professional league.  More than half of the defendants have plead to date.
