Reno Casino Hotels Offering Drastically Reduced Discounts for Those Evacuated by Approaching Wildfires

The fast-growing Hawk Fire that was spreading toward neighborhoods and consumed some homes in northwest Reno, Nevada, was caused by humans and was 0% contained Sunday, authorities said. At least six people were injured. Officials said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that 42,000 residents have been ordered evacuated, and the “GO NOW” zone reached the edge of the University of Nevada campus. An additional 45,000 people were in the evacuation warning zone, and encouraged to leave now and be prepared to stay away for several days to clear the roads for first-responders. The fire had grown to 13,000 acres (53 sq. km.) and was moving in different directions as the winds changed, complicating the fight. Casinos in Reno offered discounts on hotel rooms to evacuees. “If you have been told to evacuate, please don’t wait!” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said in a statement posted on social media late Saturday night. “Structures have already been burned in this fire and your life is more important than a building.”

Ketel Marte continues to come under fire Sunday as photos emerged on social media showing Ketel Marte at the Talking Stick Resort Casino in Scottsdale playing roulette during the team's home game against the Reds (ARI 9, CIN 0). Marte is currently on the injured list with a knee issue. "He's free to do whatever he wants," manager Torey Lovullo said following Friday's game (via the Arizona Republic). "That's how I look at it. As long as he wakes up tomorrow morning and posts, and gets his work done at Salt River, which I am certain he will, that's all that matters to me right now."  He's currently on the 10-day injured list and could return before the end of the regular season.  Alex Wood, meanwhile, had some harsh words for Marte.  "No one on the Dbacks will say it (because) he's their franchise player but being 1 game out of the wild card and Ketel Marte being at the casino during their game last night is a–hole behavior," former All-Star pitcher Alex Wood wrote on Twitter/X. "Tells you everything you need to know about him."
