Cincinnati Cleared in Brendan Sorsby Gambling Matter

OAKLAND PARK, Fla (Gambling911.com) - The NCAA has closed its inquiry into former University of Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby's gambling activity.

The Cincinnati Enquirer first broke the story Wednesday evening (September 2).

The following statement was released by UC Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications Zach Stipe:

"Earlier this summer, NCAA enforcement staff completed an inquiry into a former Cincinnati student-athlete’s prohibited betting activity during his time at the university. The inquiry is now closed, and the student-athlete was found to have committed a Level III violation.

"A Level III violation is considered isolated and limited in nature. All penalties for this violation are attached to the student-athlete and not the institution or other coaches, staff members or student-athletes.

"Cincinnati worked closely with the NCAA throughout the process, which began when the initial reports of impermissible sports wagering began."

The NCAA investigation found that Sorsby had placed thousands of sports bets totaling at least $90,000 during his college career at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. He ultimately acknowledged making 40 bets involving Indiana football while he was an Indiana player in 2022, though there were no indications he bet on games in which he played in.

Court records indicated at least 2,900 wagers totaling more than $30,000 during his Indiana years, plus at least 165 bets worth at least $38,000 during his two seasons as Cincinnati's starting quarterback.

He eventually entered into a residential gambling treatment program for 35 days.

Sorsby was expected to be Texas Tech's starting quarterback after transferring from Cincinnati. He was considered the No. 1 transfer quarterback by ESPN after throwing for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions for Cincinnati in 2025.

Instead, he had hoped to enter the 2026 NFL supplemental draft after the NCAA ruled him ineligible.  Sorsby sued the NCAA and won.  On June 8, a Texas judge issued a preliminary injunction preventing the NCAA from keeping him off the field.

The NFL ultimately decided not to conduct a supplemental draft at all in 2026. That prevented Sorsby from entering the NFL this season.  Eventually Sorsby and the NFL reached an agreement: he will sit out the entire 2026 season and will be eligible to enter the regular 2027 NFL Draft.
