Ouch! Gambler Placed $3K Bet on Rutgers to Win National Championship, Scarlett Knights Lost to UMass

OAKLAND PARK, Fla (Gambling911.com) - Talk about a bad beat.  Rutgers lost to UMass in their first game of the season Thursday night.

Rutgers was a massive -29.5 favorite against what was seen as a "lowly" UMass team.

Instead, the Minutemen stunned the Scarlett Knights 37-21.

Back in April, a bettor at a William Hill sportsbook in Nevada placed a $3,000 bet on Rutgers to win the national championship at 500-1 odds. The bet would pay a net $1.5 million, according to David Purdum of ESPN.

That gambler can pretty much kiss his $3000 bet goodbye, unless Rutgers somehow manages to win all of its games moving forward.  Don't count on it.

Then there is Dave Portnoy.

The colorful sports personality and Barstool Sports founder offered up Rutgers as his "strongest play".

“I made my 1st bet of college football season and it may be my strongest play of the year. Rutgers -29.5 to beat UMass by 40 plus,” Portnoy wrote on X before kickoff.

Gulp.

This was the biggest upset win in five years, according to The Action Network

“I apologize to everybody who followed me on the Rutgers pick. I’m not gonna point the finger at Greg Schiano or Rutgers for the most pathetic effort Ive ever seen. The buck stops with me. I will work to earn your trust back #rutgerssucks,” Portnoy wrote as it became clear Rutgers wasn’t going to get anywhere near a 40-point win.

His rant on X continued well into the night.

“Not only do I think Rutgers football should be kicked out of the Big 10 I think the football program should be disbanded,” he later wrote on the platform.
