TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Gambling911.com) - Alabama Crimson Tide fans eagerly await a new era of Keelon Russell taking over the reigns of quarterback in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is in a rare spot coming into this season, however, as their odds of winning a championship pay out $2500 for every $100 bet. All Eyes on Keelon Russell
Keelon Russell beat out Austin Mack for the QB1 job during preseason camp. Russell was an elite recruit: a unanimous five-star prospect, national Gatorade Player of the Year and one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in the 2025 recruiting class.
At Duncanville High School in Texas, Russell threw for 3,000+ yards and nearly 50 touchdowns as a senior. As a junior, he completed 180 of 243 passes for 3,267 yards and 35 TDs while also rushing for 304 yards and four scores.
His college sample is tiny. As Ty Simpson's backup last season, Russell appeared in only two games: 11-of-15 passing (73.3%) | 143 yards | 2 TD | 0 INT | 9.5 yards/attempt
"The guys believe in him, and he's got a voice out there," Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said. "He's not afraid to speak up and be vocal. I think he'll be more vocal now that he's been named the starting quarterback. I just feel when he's out there, yelling out calls, trying to get guys lined up, pulling them in, whatever the situation is, it's him and the guys all believe in him and will do what he says.”
TE Marshall Pritchett said of the new starting quarterback: “Keelon’s like dynamite in a bottle.”
Pritchett called him an “incredible athlete” and “incredible football thrower,” adding that Russell makes throws in practice that cause teammates watching film to wonder how he possibly made them.
After Russell's spring-game performance, WR Ryan Coleman-Williams offered glowing praise of Russell.
“Literally, it just feels like you’re playing a video game when he is in.”
Coleman-Williams said Russell's command of the offense has improved “light years” since his freshman season.
