OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (Gambling911.com) - Polymarket on Tuesday was forced to pull controversial prediction markets on the Cornell rape case.
The Cornell rape allegations have become a major controversy for Polymarket, which removed a betting market on October 19, 2026, after criticism from sexual assault advocates and pressure directed at its celebrity endorsers, including LeBron James.
The allegations date back to October 2024, at the Chi Phi fraternity house at Cornell University.
A former student, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, alleges that she was pressured into taking ketamine and sexually assaulted by several fraternity members over a period of hours.
She filed a civil lawsuit on September 16, 2026, naming seven men, the fraternity and Cornell University. The lawsuit alleges sexual assault and failures by the university to protect her and properly address her complaints.
The accused men deny the allegations, saying their interactions were consensual or that they were not involved. No criminal charges had been filed against the seven men as of the latest reporting reviewed.
A jaw-dropping $451,000 was traded at Polymarket with the contract asking whether any of the seven men accused in the Cornell case would be charged with a felony sex crime by January 31, 2027.
Traders assigned approximately a 28% probability that at least one of the men would face felony sex-crime charges by the deadline with the market available exclusively on Polymarket's international platform, not its U.S. app.
Polymarket initially defended the contract as a way to provide information about government accountability. After public criticism, the company removed the market.
"We went from death markets to rape markets," one person wrote on Twitter.
Others offered:
"I am pro-sports betting. This is not that. Polymarket and Kalshi should be shut down and banned with immediate effect."
"@Polymarket HOW INHUMANE is this!!! And @NYRangers aren’t you guys sponsored by this DISGUSTING company??"
"What the actual fuck! There are actual people on Polymarket, doing gambling on a RAPE CASE!!! The dinosaurs from 65 million years ago really had to die for THIS?!!"
