OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (Gambling911.com) - The gambling sites didn't get a whole lot wrong with the US midterm election betting, but one race looks to be a major upset.
BetOnline had Democrat Scott Colom paying out $650 for every $100 bet should he go on to win the Mississippi Senate race.
As of Wednesday morning, Colom led that race by 28 votes against Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith.
About 97% of the vote was counted at the time, the Associated Press estimated. Those in Colom's camp felt confident the remaining outstanding vote count should favor the Democrat.
Kalshi traders had Colom with an 86% chance to pull this off as of Wednesday morning, keeping in mind he was given just an 11 percent chance there days earlier.
If Colom wins, he would become Mississippi’s first Democratic senator since the final election of John C. Stennis in 1982. Even more historically significant, Colom would be the first Black senator from Mississippi since Blanche K. Bruce, who took office in 1875 during Reconstruction and left office in 1881. He was Mississippi’s second Black U.S. senator after Hiram Revels.
In an ironic twist, Hyde-Smith herself blocked President Joe Biden’s nomination of Colom to a federal judgeship in the Northern District of Mississippi in 2023, freeing him to run for office this year.
Democrats will take control of both the Senate and House come January following the so-called "blue wave" that swept through the nation Tuesday.
